Our History

- The history of the Episcopal Church in Wethersfield begins in 1729, when the Rev. Samuel Johnson of Stratford, Connecticut, visited Westerly, Rhode Island, and Wethersfield for the purpose of establishing Episcopal churches at these places. These initial efforts were unsuccessful.
- In 1866 the Rev. Henry W. Nelson, Jr., rector of Good Shepherd Church in Hartford conferred with some local residents of Wethersfield, and it was decided to arrange for a Sunday service. The congregation met in Academy Hall in January of 1868.
- In October of 1869 a committee was formed to organize and incorporate a parish in Wethersfield.
- Trinity Parish was received into the Diocese of Connecticut on June 15, 1870. Worship was held in the current church for the first time on Easter Day 1874, and the Church was consecrated on October 1, 1874.
- The 100th Anniversary of Trinity Parish was celebrated on October 19, 1969.
- Trinity Church has been served by 16 rectors since its founding, most recently by The Reverend John Findley (1951 - 1974), The Reverend John Rogers (1975 – 2001) and The Reverend Joanne Neel-Richards (interim, 2001 – 2006). The current Rector, The Reverend Scott Lee, was called to Trinity in the summer of 2006 and was installed as rector by The Right Reverend James Curry on February 2, 2007.
